and What History Teaches Us

The conversation about artificial intelligence in ministry rarely begins with a single, tidy question. It arrives as a swirl of concerns—practical, pastoral, and moral—often all at once.
Can we use this?
For what, exactly?
Where does it help, and where does it cross a line?
Some of the questions are ordinary. Others feel unsettling. A few feel almost surreal. And yet, this mixture of curiosity and caution is not new.
When ministries feel “behind,” it is rarely because leaders lack interest or imagination. More often, it is because they are trying to move forward without violating conscience or betraying trust. That hesitation is understandable. It has always been part of faithful leadership.
At the same time, unresolved moral hesitation can quietly harden into paralysis.
To understand why this moment feels so charged—and why the question of being “behind” keeps resurfacing—it helps to look not at novelty, but at speed.
Speed of Adoption Is the Real Story
When we look back at major technology shifts, we often use household adoption data—not because homes mattered more, but because those measurements give us the clearest long‑run picture of how quickly a technology moved from unusual to expected.
Those timelines tell a consistent story.

Telephones took decades to normalize. Radio adoption accelerated the curve. Television compressed it further. The internet shortened the cycle again. Social media reduced mass adoption to just a few years.
Artificial intelligence compressed that entire process into months.
The significance is not novelty. It's time compression and the need to maintain wisdom and discernment as new capabilities fly at you.
Timing Has Always Required Discernment
Churches and Christian nonprofits have never evaluated technology simply by asking whether it exists or whether others are using it.
They have always asked a more careful question:
Is this an appropriate use of this capability for the mission we are carrying out in this season?
That question has always carried a moral dimension.
Moral hesitation has accompanied the early days of nearly every major technology used in ministry. Concerns about influence, formation, manipulation, and authority surfaced early with radio, television, the internet, and social media. Some fears proved exaggerated.
Others proved prescient.
Caution was not a failure of leadership. It was an expression of responsibility.
The challenge has never been moral concern itself. The challenge has been what happens when concern remains unresolved while adoption accelerates around it.
From Avant‑Garde to Invisible Infrastructure
At one time, radio was genuinely avant‑garde for ministry. It extended teaching beyond physical walls and reached people who would never attend in person. Over time, it became standard. Every major ministry had a broadcast presence.
Today, radio is largely played out as a starting point for new ministry initiatives.
That does not mean audio teaching disappeared.
What changed was not the message. What changed was the medium that carried it.
Radio and podcasting carry largely the same type of content—audio teaching—but under very different technological, economic, and cultural constraints.
The sermon remained. The devotional remained. The teaching remained.
Radio required centralized infrastructure, scheduled programming, geographic reach, and significant cost. Podcasting is decentralized, on‑demand, inexpensive, and portable.
Because the medium changed, the use case changed.
No one objects to sermons being transmitted through audio. But almost no one would recommend starting a new radio ministry in 2026—not because radio is immoral or audio is obsolete, but because the leverage no longer justifies the investment.
The medium changed. The content stayed largely the same. The use case evolved accordingly.
Moral Caution and the Risk of Paralysis
This same pattern appears across ministry technologies.
Websites were once debated as unnecessary. Church management systems were initially resisted as impersonal. Email, digital giving, and online forms moved from optional to essential. Social media passed through confusion, excess, and eventual governance.
In each case, moral questions surfaced early. Over time, norms developed. Boundaries were drawn. Practices matured.
Healthy systems eventually feel boring. That boredom is not failure. It is stewardship.
Artificial intelligence complicates this familiar process because it accelerates everything at once—capability, expectation, and consequence.
Sometimes ministries fall behind not because they lack interest, but because leaders are unsure how to move forward without violating conscience or trust. That hesitation deserves respect.
But when hesitation remains unresolved while systems harden, decisions get made by default rather than discernment.
Why AI is Different
Artificial intelligence enters ministry life at a moment when the window for discernment has narrowed dramatically.
Earlier technologies allowed years—sometimes decades—for norms, guardrails, and best practices to emerge. AI does not offer that luxury.
Capabilities spread before policies are written. Expectations form before leadership consensus exists. Decisions become embedded in workflows before they are examined.
What is different is that AI is being used to create content as well as distribute it, and even make decisions on who receives it. AI is not a monolith. It's not just ChatGPT or Gemini or Claude or Grok writing text or doing research. Can I take an image of myself and turn it into a video of me saying things I would probably say, but actually never have? Am I accidentally (or not) using intellectual property without consent?
Can a chatbot provide sufficient answers to questions our website visitors have, or does it require a human component?
Can I use AI to evaluate donor trends and make decisions about who needs a nudge and send automatic text messages to?
When leaders feel uneasy about AI, that instinct should not be dismissed as fear or resistance. Often, it is a recognition that responsibility is being compressed faster than wisdom can comfortably keep pace.
Takeaway: What Can Ministries do about AI Now?
Artificial intelligence does not require ministries to have all the answers immediately. But it does require leaders to decide how answers will be reached.
The first and most important step is to clarify the actual decision being made. Most AI conversations stall because they remain abstract. “Should we use AI?” is too broad to be useful. The better question is always more specific: What task are we considering delegating, and what responsibility does that task carry?
Writing assistance is not the same as pastoral care. Data analysis is not the same as donor communication. Content distribution is not the same as moral authority. AI decisions are not binary. They are task-specific. Precision here reduces both fear and overreach.
One of the reasons AI feels overwhelming is that it touches multiple layers of ministry work at once. It can create content, distribute it, and even influence decisions about who receives what and when. Ministries will benefit from intentionally separating those functions rather than treating AI as a single, monolithic capability.
Many organizations will find it appropriate to use AI to assist with creation—drafting, summarizing, organizing, or analyzing information. Others may decide to allow AI to support distribution, helping ensure that the right information reaches the right people at the right time. Decision-making, however, often carries a different moral weight. A ministry may decide that AI can inform decisions, but not autonomously make them. What matters most is that these boundaries are chosen deliberately, not inherited accidentally.
Every ministry should also name where human presence is non-negotiable. There are moments where judgment, empathy, prayer, and discernment are not peripheral to the work—they are the work. Pastoral counseling, crisis response, sensitive donor conversations, theological explanation, and conflict resolution all tend to fall into this category. AI may assist around these moments, but it should not replace presence within them. Drawing these lines protects trust and prevents the quiet outsourcing of responsibility.
Trust, not efficiency, is the scarcest resource in ministry. Before adopting any AI-enabled practice, leaders should ask whether they would be comfortable explaining its use publicly. Would a congregant feel misled? Would a donor feel manipulated? If transparency would undermine trust, the issue is not artificial intelligence itself, but misalignment between values and practice. In many cases, voluntary restraint will build more credibility than aggressive adoption.
One of the most practical steps ministries can take right now is to write down what they have decided—even if those decisions are provisional. This does not need to be a formal policy manual. A simple, living document is often enough: what the ministry is experimenting with, what it is not using, what requires human review, and when these decisions will be revisited. Putting current posture into words turns anxiety into governance and gives future leaders clarity when systems evolve faster than institutional memory.
Finally, discernment should be scheduled, not reactive. Artificial intelligence will continue to change. Waiting until pressure forces a decision almost guarantees haste. Setting a regular cadence—quarterly or biannually—to review where AI is helping, where it feels uncomfortable, and where adjustments are needed allows leadership to remain intentional rather than defensive. Discernment has never been a one-time act. It is an ongoing responsibility.
The ministries that navigate AI faithfully will not be the fastest adopters or the loudest critics. They will be the ones who decide carefully, document honestly, and revisit their decisions before default becomes destiny.
